Penance was created using trapunto, the textile process of stuffing sewn shapes to create dimension. This piece is made of silk gauze, silk dupioni, and copper brillo pads.
This piece is meant to represent a proper home for the heart of a guilty conscience. The heart would rest, uncomfortably raised in the bed of copper netting. It would be simultaneously displayed and protected, tormented and supported. There is intent in this suffering, a willingness and desire to publicly atone for one's misdeeds in search of forgiveness and relief.
Heart Space 1, 2, 3 and 4 track my reactions, internally and externally to trauma over time. Each piece deals with a specific traumatic event and was created shortly after as a way to communicate a need for either self-punishment as in the piece "Penance"; self-soothing as in the piece "Comfort"; self-preservation as in the piece "Inside In"; or safety in withdraw as in the piece "Dissociative Lite."
